West African College of Surgeons
The West African College of Surgeons is an association of West African Surgeons founded in 1960 with fifteen members from both Anglophone and Francophone countries in four surgical disciplines, including; General surgery, Anaesthesia, Otorhinolaryncology, Obstetrics and Gynecology. It became a college in 1973 with 267 elected fellows. The college's first fellowship by examination was awarded to Oladele O. Olusanya (MD) in 1983 and was the 620th fellow on the roll of the college. The incumbent President of the college is Professor Akinyinka Omigbodun, a Nigerian professor of Gynecology & Obstetrics and former Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, the largest and oldest Medical school in Nigeria.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Why Nigeria health sector is ill-expert )
==History==
The College was founded in 1960 and the first council meeting took place at the University of Ibadan on December 3, 1960. University of Ibadan is also the venue for the first annual conference held in 1961.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Prof. Oluyinka Olutoye: Outstanding Contributions To Surgery )〕 The idea that led to the foundation of the college came from a casual discussion between Victor Anomah Ngu, a Cameroonian professor of Medicine and Dr. Charles Bowesman on the need for an association of Surgeons in practice in West Africa. In 1973, the association metamorphosed into college that we have today, to promote postgraduate education an training in surgery. On January 1975, the college was inaugurated as a constituent college of the West African Postgraduate Medical College (WAPMC) that served as a specialized agency for the West African Health Community.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=College history )
